Food in England is a comprehensive study of a way of life that will never be seen again. I loved every carefully sourced bit of it. Dorothy Hartley was the real deal. The author of many volumes of English social history, she grew up in the north of England and was intimate with the old customs. She discusses roast beef all the way from the types of cattle raised in different regions – complete with her own charming drawings – to why beef must be spit-cooked to achieve the true roasted savor. Napoli -- Marvellous book on English food and culture... : I became interested in reading this book after watching a British television show (on YouTube) on Dorothy Hartley and her writings. I received the book yesterday and I'm already a quarter of the way through it. It is not your usual history book--the book is easy to read, and Dorothy' s writing style is delightful. She was also an excellent illustrator, and her wonderful illustrations enhance the reading experience. I would recommend this book to food and history lovers alike. A very important historic piece, although I wish she had referred to her sources for each recipe; sometimes she does but for others there are quotation marks and no source cited. This would have made it more useful academically which is the reason why I bought. But at the time of its original publication, (as war-time rationing was coming to an end in Britain), it served to make readers aware of British food and many links to the past. There is a bibliography which would need more research to dig out some of her references as it's a bit vague. This reprint is good quality for a paperback. 676 pages will keep anyone busy; presenting a massive stepping stone for those interested in the history of food.
